Bariatric & Metabolic Surgery in India

Advanced, Minimally Invasive Weight Loss Surgery for International Patients
About the Disease

Overview

Bariatric Surgery Is a Safe, Effective Treatment for Obesity

If diet and exercise haven't worked, bariatric surgery (weight loss surgery) is a clinically recognised treatment for obesity, not a last resort. Obesity affects more than 1 billion people worldwide and raises the risk of Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and sleep apnea—conditions that respond to medical treatment, not a personal failing.

Modern bariatric procedures are minimally invasive and are typically delivered alongside nutritional and psychological support. Many patients experience significant, sustained weight loss and improvement—in some cases remission—of obesity-related conditions such as Type 2 diabetes.

" How much weight loss or condition improvement any individual patient can expect depends on procedure type, starting health status, and adherence to post-surgical care. Ask your surgical team for outcome data specific to your case and procedure rather than relying on general statistics. "

Why Choose India for Bariatric Surgery

India has become a leading destination for international patients seeking bariatric and metabolic surgery, combining advanced hospital care, experienced surgeons, and shorter waiting times than many Western countries.

Patients choose bariatric surgery in India for several practical reasons:

  • Internationally trained bariatric surgeons.
  • Advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgical techniques.
  • Full multidisciplinary care from a coordinated team—including the surgeon, dietitian, psychologist, and physician.
  • Shorter wait times than in many Western countries.
  • Treatment costs are typically a fraction of US or UK pricing (see Section 8).

ASAR Care is not a marketplace listing multiple unrelated hospitals. It is an independent patient advocate focused specifically on bariatric and metabolic care, helping patients choose the right treatment path and supporting them before, during, and after travel.

Is Bariatric Surgery Right for You?

This section is for general information only. It is not a substitute for a full medical, nutritional, and psychological evaluation, and it should not be used for self-diagnosis or self-selection of a procedure. Your suitability for surgery is confirmed only after review by a qualified bariatric team.

Bariatric surgery may be suitable if you:

  • Have a BMI of 35 or higher, regardless of other health conditions.
  • Have a BMI of 30–34.9 with a related metabolic condition—such as Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnea—that has not improved adequately with non-surgical treatment.
  • Have tried diet, exercise, and medication without lasting results.
  • Are ready to commit to long-term lifestyle changes and follow-up care.

Bariatric & Metabolic Surgery Procedures

We support six procedure options, selected according to your medical needs and goals. Your surgical team will recommend the most appropriate option after reviewing your full medical history.

Talk to an Expert Individual outcomes vary by procedure, patient health status, and adherence to post-operative care. Ask your surgical team for outcome data relevant to your specific case.

Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy

A key part of the stomach is removed, leaving a smaller, tube-shaped stomach

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass

A small stomach pouch is created and connected to the small intestine, so food bypasses part of the stomach and intestine

Mini Gastric Bypass (OAGB/MGB)

A simpler bypass procedure that creates a smaller stomach and reroutes part of the intestine

Revision Bariatric Surgery

A follow-up surgery for patients who have had a previous bariatric procedure

Metabolic Surgery for Type 2 Diabetes

Surgery designed to improve diabetes control in people with obesity

Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG)

A non-surgical, incision-free procedure that reduces stomach size using an endoscope

Your Treatment Journey

Before You Travel: Submitting Medical Records for Review

Before travelling, patients are encouraged to share their medical records for a preliminary review by the bariatric team. This helps assess suitability for surgery and allows the team to build a personalised treatment plan.

Helpful documents include:

  • Recent blood test results.
  • Diabetes and metabolic health reports.
  • Sleep study results, if available.
  • Cardiac evaluation reports.
  • Imaging reports such as ultrasound or endoscopy.
  • Previous surgical records, especially for revision cases.
  • Weight history and prior weight-loss treatment records.

While You Are in India

Your care plan typically includes:

  • Pre-op tests & surgery: One day of evaluation, followed by hospital admission and surgery.
  • Hospital stay & recovery: Typically 2–4 days in hospital, followed by 3–7 days of in-country recovery.
  • Return home, supported: Ongoing virtual follow-up with your surgeon and dietitian.

Bariatric surgery is not only about weight loss. It is a clinically recognised treatment that can improve obesity-related conditions and support long-term health. With the right team, the journey is structured, personalised, and patient-focused from start to finish.

Safety, Quality & Technology

What to Look For in a Bariatric Programme

Before travelling, patients are encouraged to share their medical records for a preliminary review by the bariatric team. This helps assess suitability for surgery and allows the team to build a personalised treatment plan.

Helpful documents include:

  • Recent blood test results.
  • Diabetes and metabolic health reports.

  • Cardiac evaluation reports.
  • Imaging reports such as ultrasound or endoscopy.
  • Previous surgical records, especially for revision cases.
  • Weight history and prior weight-loss treatment records.
Technology
” This is a checklist of what to look for in any bariatric programme, not a claim that every ASAR Care partner facility meets every item listed. Ask your coordinator which specific accreditations, protocols, and outcome data apply to your matched facility before booking. “

The Technology Behind Your Care

” Technology availability varies by facility. Named surgical platforms — including robotic systems such as da Vinci 5, where referenced elsewhere in ASAR Care materials — are not present at every partner hospital. Confirm with your coordinator which specific technology is available at your matched facility before booking, particularly if a specific platform is a deciding factor for you. “

Bariatric Surgery Cost in India

One of the main reasons international patients choose India for bariatric surgery is the cost advantage compared to the US and UK.

“Figures reflect indicative price ranges based on ASAR Care partner-clinic quotations as of 2024–2025 and are planning estimates only, not fixed prices. US/UK comparator figures are approximate market ranges and have not been independently verified against a single named third-party source. Mini Gastric Bypass is less commonly offered as a first-line procedure in the US/UK, so a direct percentage comparison is not provided — request a personalised, itemised quote after your free case review. “

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions international patients have about receiving treatment in India through ASAR Care.

Most patients stay 7–10 days, covering pre-op assessment, surgery, hospital recovery, and initial follow-up. Long-haul flights are generally avoided for the first 2–3 weeks after surgery — plan your return travel accordingly.

Suitability depends on your BMI, overall health, and prior weight-loss attempts, assessed through a full medical, nutritional, and psychological evaluation. See Section 4 for general eligibility criteria based on ASMBS/IFSO guidelines, and Section 6 for how the pre-travel medical review works.

Metabolic surgery — particularly gastric bypass — is associated with meaningful blood sugar improvement in many patients with type 2 diabetes, and some patients achieve remission. Individual results vary significantly by procedure, disease duration, and other health factors; ask your surgical team what outcomes are realistic for your specific case.

This depends on your BMI, health conditions, prior surgeries, and personal goals. Your surgeon will recommend the most appropriate option after reviewing your medical history and records.

When performed by experienced surgeons in accredited hospitals with appropriate post-operative protocols, bariatric surgery has an established safety profile, though as with any surgery, risks and possible complications exist. Discuss the specific risks relevant to your procedure and health history with your surgical team.

Most patients are medically cleared within 7–10 days, though long-haul flights are generally avoided for the first 2–3 weeks due to blood clot risk. Your surgical team will confirm timing for your specific case.

Scheduled video consultations, remote review of blood test results, nutritional counselling, and ongoing coordinator access to help manage your recovery and connect you with local care if needed.
