Cancer Treatment in India
What Is Cancer?
Cancer is a disease in which abnormal cells grow and divide uncontrollably, forming tumors that can damage organs such as the lungs, breast, colon, or blood.
Metastasis is the spread of cancer cells from the original tumor to other parts of the body through the bloodstream or lymphatic system.
A tumor is an abnormal mass of tissue — either benign (non-cancerous, does not spread) or malignant (cancerous, capable of invading nearby tissue).
Most Common Cancer Worldwide: Lung cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer globally, followed by breast, colorectal, prostate and stomach cancers.
Cancer Cases by Region: Asia has the largest number of new cancer cases globally, followed by Europe and Northern America.
Global Cancer Cases by 2050: IARC estimates that global cancer cases could rise from 20.6 million in 2024 to 34.4 million by 2050.

Cancer Stages
Cancer stage describes how much cancer is in the body and how far it has spread (American Cancer Society):
Note: Blood cancers, including leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma, may use different staging or classification systems and may not follow the standard Stage 0–IV framework. Please consult your healthcare provider for an accurate interpretation of your diagnosis.
Why Finding Cancer Early Matters
Finding cancer early means diagnosing it before it has spread widely. For many cancers, treatment may be more effective when the disease is found at an earlier stage. Early diagnosis may also give doctors more treatment options.
Finding cancer early may:
- Detect cancer before it spreads to other parts of the body
- Give doctors more treatment options, depending on the type and stage of cancer
- Help treatment begin sooner when clinically appropriate
- Improve the potential for longer survival and, for some cancers, better quality of life
What the Evidence Shows
- The WHO says that finding and treating cancer early can improve the likelihood of survival. Cancer diagnosed at a later stage may be harder to treat and may require more complex care, potentially resulting in greater treatment-related health problems and higher costs. Early diagnosis is most beneficial when people can access appropriate testing and treatment without delay.
- A 2026 IARC analysis estimated that about 1.4 million cancer deaths worldwide among people diagnosed in 2022 might have been avoided through improved early detection and curative treatment. The estimate varied by cancer type and country.
- A 2025 review of seven cancers – bladder, stomach, head and neck, skin, lung, kidney and triple-negative breast cancer – found that people diagnosed earlier generally lived longer and had a lower risk of dying.
Earlier diagnosis was also linked to lower healthcare use and costs for some cancers. Because the studies were observational, they show a link but cannot prove that early detection alone caused these better outcomes. (Aguiar-Ibáñez R, et al., Frontiers in Oncology, 2025)
Cancer outcomes vary from person to person and depend on the type and stage of cancer, tumour characteristics, treatment, other health conditions and access to care. Population-level statistics cannot predict an individual patient's outcome.
