What Is an MRI Scan?

An MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves, rather than radiation, to produce detailed images of soft tissue. It is particularly effective for examining the brain, spinal cord, joints, and ligaments.

The core difference lies in the technology and what each scan shows best. CT scans use ionising radiation and are quicker, making them well-suited to emergencies and bone imaging. When Is a CT Scan Usually Recommended?

Doctors typically recommend CT scans for trauma and accident cases, suspected internal bleeding, chest and lung conditions, kidney stones, and cancer staging, where speed and bone detail matter most.

When Is an MRI Usually Recommended?

MRI is generally recommended for brain and spinal cord conditions, joint and ligament injuries, suspected tumours in soft tissue, and cases requiring detailed imaging without radiation exposure — such as in children or during certain pregnancies.

Is MRI Better Than CT?

Neither scan is universally “better” — each is suited to different diagnostic needs. Your doctor’s choice depends on the body part being examined, the suspected condition, and how urgently results are needed.

Do MRI or CT Scans Have Any Risks?

CT scans involve a small dose of ionising radiation, and contrast dye (if used) carries a low risk of allergic reaction. MRI scans do not use radiation but are generally unsuitable for patients with certain metal implants or pacemakers, and some patients experience discomfort from the enclosed scanner or the contrast agent used.

How Should You Prepare for Your Scan?

Preparation varies by scan type and body part. You may be asked to fast beforehand, remove metal objects and jewellery, and inform your doctor of any implants, pregnancy, or allergies. Always follow the specific instructions provided by your imaging centre.
